Boiler system replacement, East Kent College Canterbury
The East Kent College Group comprises six community-based colleges throughout East Kent. The Canterbury Campus serves approximately 4,500 students, offering a diverse range of subjects across eleven buildings, each equipped with various on-site facilities. These buildings are either supported by a centralised district heating system or individual standalone boiler plants.
In 2019, the D Block plant room was retrofitted by others, with eight Ideal Evomax boilers, totalling 1.2 MW, installed on a manufacturer’s frame and header kit, alongside low-loss headers. This installation replaced the three original ICI Caldaie shell and tube boilers. However, several components, including heat exchangers, began to fail at an alarming rate, likely due to excessive flow rates and detrimental conditions affecting the system. Independent Heating and Cooling, were tasked with devising a cost-effective solution for the boiler replacement.

The existing primary pipework was modified to incorporate a reverse return arrangement, ensuring equal flow across each plate heat exchanger. Additionally, the existing primary pump set was retrofitted with inverters to achieve the required flow rate through the pipework and plate heat exchangers. To protect the separated boiler-side pipework from corrosion, inhibitors were applied. Upon completion, lagging was installed on the new pipework to match the existing plant room insulation.
Following a successful commissioning by the manufacturer, in conjunction with the newly inverter-driven pumps, the system was activated now having a 5 year warranty.
In summary, the East Kent College Group’s Canterbury Campus encountered significant challenges with its existing boiler system, leading to frequent component failures. By retrofitting and optimising the system with more efficient Ideal Evomax2 boilers and implementing hydraulic separation, the college achieved a cost-effective solution that enhanced reliability and performance. This upgrade ensures consistent heating and hot water supply throughout the campus.
