Brighton Jubilee Library – Replacement of Air Handling Unit Heat Exchangers

Brighton Jubilee Library, the largest public library in Brighton and Hove, is a key feature of the Jubilee Square development in central Brighton. Originally inaugurated in March 2005, the library is housed within a £14 million landmark building that was designed to be both innovative and energy-efficient, setting a standard for public buildings in the UK at the time.

Eighteen years after its opening, the library initiated a renewal program that necessitated the replacement of the heat exchangers in the air handling units (AHUs) responsible for heating the facility. Independent Heating and Cooling (IHC) was contracted to specify, supply, and install the new equipment located in the rooftop plant room.

The project encompassed the following tasks:

Decommissioning of the two existing gas heaters, including both gas and electrical connections.
Removal of the AHU panels to facilitate access for replacement works.
Dismantling of the existing closure plates and duct transitions.
Utilising a crane to safely remove the obsolete heat exchangers from the rooftop and dispose of them appropriately.
Lifting the replacement heat exchangers into the plant room.
Installing the new heat exchangers into the AHUs.
Manufacturing and installing the new closure panels and transitions.
Installing new flue components to connect to the existing concentric flue systems through the roof.
Installing condensate drain pumps, fittings, and discharge hoses.
Conducting necessary gas alterations within the AHUs.
Recommissioning the units to ensure proper functionality.

Upon completion of the project, the client expressed satisfaction with the results. The integration of all existing control systems and schedules with the new heat exchangers facilitated a seamless transition.
